40 to 40 (Gratitude 13)

A verse that has always stood out to me is John 17:3. It is in the midst of a prayer that Jesus prayed. It says (NIV):

Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

I remember studying this passage during an InterVarsity conference. It jumped out that Jesus had defined eternal life and it wasn't simply "living forever." Rather, eternal life is knowing God and Jesus.

It hit me that eternal life does not begin some day when we die. It begins the moment we begin to know God. I am grateful for this truth that seems so simple yet is often skimmed over. Eternal life: Knowing God. Yes, when we get to heaven we will more fully know God, but it has already begun for those who believe.
